Solving the energy crisis in
education estates

Venue: The Building Centre, Store Street, London WC1E 7BT

Time; 7.45 - 10.15am

Education estates are facing unprecedented increases in their gas and electricity bills. According to TES some schools are planning to cut back on teacher recruitment to offset these huge rises - to the detriment of the children they are teaching at a time when catch-up efforts are a national priority. Universities are not immune, with the scale and cost of low carbon technologies having a dramatic impact on long term planning for estates.

The Department for Education published in December 2022, guidance to support building users, premises managers and senior leadership teams to reduce energy, costs and carbon use.

Meanwhile the Department for Education (DfE) supported by Innovate UK has partnered with construction innovators to deliver GenZero - a research project to deliver a new ultra-low carbon building standard for schools.

Come and join us as we discuss:

  • The scale of the challenge educational estates face.

  • How the cultural landscape has changed with respect to sustainability.

  • What we can do to remedy the energy and carbon challenges.

  • Examples of where this has been done.

  • Summary and encouragement to do better.

  • Alternative fuel sources for learning.
